No Time to Lose

Julia Reiners Recommends Pema Chodron’s books, especially “No Time to Lose: A Timely Guide to the Way of the Bodhisattva”:  Absolutely anything and everything ever written by Pema Chodron! “No Time to Lose: A Timely Guide to the Way of the Bodhisattva” is my favorite so far, and it’s a commentary on one of the most popular texts in Tibetan Buddhism that has to do with cultivation of compassion and practices related to that. But she writes it in a really accessible and engaging way. It helped me understand the basics more than any other book I’ve read on Buddhism.

The Joy of Living

“The Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret and Science of Happiness” by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. This teacher does an amazing job of making meditation simple to understand and easy to practice. This book and his other teachings on YouTube helped me understand meditation so much better than anything else I’ve ever come across. Although he is the son of one of the most accomplished contemporary meditation teachers in the Tibetan tradition, and he started practicing meditation very young, he struggled for years with severe anxiety and panic attacks. So in his books he talks about the methods he used to overcome that.

What if God Were the Sun? by John Edwards:

A warm and poignant story about one family and how it handles life, love, and death over the generations.

In this reissue of his first novel, John Edward draws upon his vast experience with people throughout the world—and their loved ones who have crossed over—to create an enduring tale that will touch the heart of anyone who reads it.

Timothy Callahan comes from a large Italian American family that delights in big gatherings, as well as Grandma Rosie’s famous meatball recipe. But above all else, the Callahans love one another. So when Timothy learns that his mother is dying of cancer, he begins to ponder the afterlife—and flashes back to his childhood, when his mother explained that God was the sun, an epiphany that becomes more tangible as her illness progresses.
